Denouement
I’d like to propose that we cease the recent habit of harshly criticizing each passing year. This began pre-COVID, during years where large numbers of influential musicians passed away. People would say how much the year sucked, how awful it was. It seems we had a few in a row, and then a global pandemic. Understandably people are happy to have those things in the rear view mirror of history.
I believe these final days of the year are an opportunity for reflection. We cannot have highs without lows. We need to feel bad sometimes in order to feel the fullness of joy. A phrase that I’ve heard a lot recently is “being comfortable with being uncomfortable,” and that speaks well to what I’m saying. Anyone can be their best selves when the road is even and wide. It’s another thing entirely to find grace and character when wandering alone in the bramble. The obstacles I faced in 2022 made me better, and I’m as grateful for them as I am the victories and accomplishments.
